version An
introduction to the poem:
Afonso Henriques was the first Portuguese king, who carved the country's independence
by the strength of his sword fighting alternatively against his powerful Northern
neighbour, the Emperor of Castille and Leon, and the scattered but nonetheless
less powerful Southern Muslin. See,
also, the references to Afonso Henriques in the poem Countess
Teresa. King
Afonso Henriques Father,
you were a knight. Today
the vigil is ours. Give
us your full example And
the fullness of your strength! Give
us, to ward against that stray hour When
new infidels hold sway, Your
blessing as a sword, Your
sword as a blessing!
